How to grow a Shami plant from cuttings.

The Syrian plant, scientifically known as Prosopis cinerea, holds an important place in both Ayurveda and Hindu mythology. The word ‘Shami’ translates to “purify” or “subdue” and the tree is believed to have the power to cleanse people of their sins.

In Hindu mythology, it is said that the Pandavas worshiped the Syrian plant before the epic battle of Kurukshetra to ensure victory.

This drought-tolerant small tree thrives in hot and dry climates, reaching a height of 3-5 feet, with 7-14 leaflets per leaf. In Vastu Shastra, the Shami plant is considered especially good for those affected by the planet Shani (Saturn).

It is recommended to plant the shami tree in the west direction, as planting it in the wrong direction brings bad luck.

To grow a Shami plant, you can easily grow it from cuttings by following these steps.

1. Find a healthy Syrian plant and cut the stems at a 45° angle, taking at least three to four cuttings at a time.

2. Remove the leaves from the sides of the stems, keeping the top leaves intact.

3. Speed ​​up the rooting process by dipping the cuttings in a rooting hormone (natural or synthetic).

4. Prepare a potting mix by mixing equal parts of sand, compost, and loam. Place pots or pebbles in the bottom of the pot to facilitate drainage.

5. Poke holes in the potting mix with your fingers or a pointed object, dip the cuttings in the rooting hormone and plant them in the pot. Water well.

– Shami plants need plenty of indirect sunlight during germination, so provide filtered sunlight or shade.

– Maintain a minimum temperature of 9-20°C during germination and protect the plant from strong sunlight in hot summers.

– Prune the plant to promote growth, removing dead leaves and flowers as needed.
