The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council has decided to reduce the GST rate on prepackaged and labeled millet flour to 5% from the current 18% for 70% millet flour.

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council has decided to reduce the GST rate on pre-packaged and labeled millet flour to 5 percent from the existing 18 percent during the Council meeting on October 9, 2023. It has been considered that millet flour sold in loose form is exempted from GST.












Nutritional value of millet

The government’s main objective in reducing the GST rate on millet flour preparations is to increase the access of common citizens to these nutritious food items. Millet flour is known for its nutritional value and health benefits which has gained great popularity among health conscious consumers in India.

Millets are also an excellent source of nutrients that can lower high blood sugar levels. They are considered a powerhouse of nutrients that can manage diabetes and are also beneficial for the heart.












Sorghum growth pattern

Due to millet’s short growing season, millet can grow from seed to harvest-ready crops in just 60 – 70 days. This highly beneficial feature of millet is of great importance in densely populated areas and if properly stored, millet can keep well for two years or more.
